ether.fi Cash Card Review 2026: Self-Custody Credit, Cashback and the Fine Print
By the MyCardCrypto team · Updated 23 October 2026 · Fees checked on 8 and 21 October 2026
ether.fi Cash is a Visa Signature credit card that spends from a self-custodial Vault, directly or through an Aave loan. It pays 3% cashback up to a monthly cap, in ETHFI tokens. Documents checked on 8 October 2026; we do not hold the card.
Best for: US, UK and EU holders of USDC or ETH who want to spend without selling or a custodian; Pinnacle suits very big spenders.
Not for: residents of the Netherlands, Finland, Estonia or 20 US states; anyone wanting dollar cashback; borrowers who won’t watch liquidation risk.
Our rating: 7.5/10 — real self-custody and high rewards, held back by token payouts and shifting terms. This is not financial advice; fees and availability change — check the issuer before applying.
Is ether.fi Cash Right for You?
Three conditions decide it: your country is listed, you hold stablecoins or ETH you would rather not sell, and you accept rewards in a token.
| Your situation | Better pick |
|---|---|
| You hold USDC or ETH and want to spend it without selling or a custodian | This card |
| You want cashback in US dollars rather than in a token | KAST |
| You want a self-custodial credit card with key export today and live outside the EU and UK | Avici |
| You pay in many currencies and want no FX fee | Wirex One |
| You are leaving Gnosis Pay, which stops on 20 December 2026 | This card, if your country is listed |
| You put $10,000 or more a month on cards | This card on Luxe or Pinnacle |
Can You Get It Where You Live?
The help centre lists 88 countries and territories for the physical card, including the UK, Switzerland and 22 EU members (updated 7 October 2026). Belgium and Ireland get a virtual card only; the Netherlands, Finland and Estonia are missing.
In the US, 30 states plus Washington, DC qualify. Not listed: Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin. “If your jurisdiction is not listed, you will not be able to apply for a Cash card at this time”.
Canada is on the list, yet the Terms of Use of 9 September 2026 say the services “are not available to residents or citizens of Canada”. Ask support first.

| Borrow interest | Variable Aave v4 rate, “around 4%” on 13 Aug 2026 |
| Lost-email recovery | $50, up to 60 days |
On fees and cards, the help centre contradicts itself in four places, so we show both figures.
- Core physical card: $50, or “Free; shipping fee applies” in the membership table.
- Free virtual cards: Luxe 4 or 2; VIP 50 or “Unlimited”.
- The $10 first virtual card: 14 named countries, while the limits page adds Hong Kong, the UK and Singapore.
- Pinnacle account protection: $200,000 or $100,000.
Two figures are missing: the Core and Luxe ATM fee (archived card pages from October 2025 to August 2026 showed 2%) and any delivery time for physical cards.
How This Self-Custodial Crypto Credit Card Works
Your Vault and Who Holds the Key
Your balance sits in a Vault, a Safe-style smart account on Optimism. Its owner is a signer that Turnkey creates inside AWS Nitro secure enclaves, unlocked by your passkey, email or social login. The company says it never has access to that key or your funds, but you cannot export the key yet: export is “planned and will be available in a future update”.
Direct Pay or Borrow
- Direct Pay spends USDC from the Vault, then LiquidUSD, with no interest. Another help article, updated the same day, lists eight assets you can rank, including USDT and EURC.
- Borrow keeps your coins and borrows against them on Aave v4 at a variable rate, “around 4%” on 13 August 2026. “Interest starts immediately and never pauses”, with no grace period or billing cycle.
Borrowing power is 81% of the value of USDC, USDT or EURC, 55% for weETH or WETH and 20% for ETHFI (27 August 2026). Spending needs a health factor of at least 1.1; at 1.00 or below, collateral can be sold with a liquidation bonus. A refund on a Borrow purchase “does not automatically repay or reduce what you owe”.
Who Issues the Card and Who Checks Your ID
Third National issues the card under a Visa licence, your user agreement is with Ether.Fi SEZC, a Cayman Islands company, and the payment contract names Rain or Reap as BIN sponsor. The issuer “does not originate or extend credit to you”: the credit comes from a DeFi market, not a bank.
KYC applies “to all users without exception”: phone, government ID, a selfie with a liveness check and your address; most checks are reviewed within 48 hours. A $10 crypto deposit is needed before verification completes. The Vault also takes ETH, weETH, ETHFI and BTC.
ether.fi Cashback: 3% Paid in ETHFI, Up to a Cap
The 3% covers the first $2,000 of USD spend a month on Core, $10,000 on Luxe and $50,000 on Pinnacle (VIP: 4%). Above the cap Core pays 1% up to $3,000, then 0.5%, so at $5,000 a month its blended rate would be 1.6%; but $5,000 of monthly card spend also earns Luxe (5,000 points), where 3% runs to $10,000.
Euro purchases have lower caps on the same counter: 3% stops at the dollar equivalent of $800 on Core. Cashback is set in dollars, converted to ETHFI when the purchase clears and locked for 7 days; you claim it from $5. It can expire after six months of account inactivity.
The terms of 18 September 2026 let the company change rates and caps on 30 days’ notice, switch the reward token at its discretion with notice, or end the programme at any time.
ATM withdrawals, P2P transfers, gift cards, tax payments, rent and crypto purchases earn nothing. Token rewards can also be taxable; our crypto card guide covers tax basics.

How the Terms Changed, 2024–2026
Rebuilt from Wayback Machine copies:
- Sep 2024: launch on Scroll; pre-orders were due to ship from 16 September.
- Oct 2025: 2% on Core, 3% on Luxe and Pinnacle (3% for all until 31 December), paid in SCR and capped at $1,000 a month; FX 1%; ATM 2%, $250 a withdrawal.
- Mar 2026: cashback in wETH, paid automatically.
- Apr 2026: 3% on every level, FX 1%, ATM 2%; moved to OP Mainnet on 16 April.
- Jul 2026: cashback in USD, shown as USDC.
- Aug 2026: 3% caps of $2,000 / $10,000 / $50,000; zero FX on USD and EUR; Luxe at 10K points.
- Sep 2026: ETHFI payouts with a 7-day lock by the 11th; 1,000 points per $1,000 instead of 3,000 from the 15th; the ATM limit read $500 × 3 on 3 September and $1,000 × 5 by the 17th.
Four payout tokens in under a year; on the August terms, about $3,333 of monthly card spend reached Luxe. Plan for the terms to move.
The Honest Catches in the Fine Print
1. Your 3% Arrives as a Token, Not as Dollars
The reward is fixed in ETHFI when the purchase clears, so its dollar value moves with the token during the 7-day lock and after. The help centre says so: “ETHFI’s market value can move”.
2. Self-Custody, With a Role for the Company
Card payments are pulled from your Vault by a wallet with the company’s ETHER_FI_WALLET_ROLE, within daily and monthly limits you set; limit changes apply after a delay. A security post of 23 June 2026 says such powers, “a credit card spending flow for example”, are documented per product, and the protocol can pause the system during an exploit.
3. Lose Your Email, Lose Access for Up to 60 Days
The Vault is tied to your sign-up email, and support cannot change it. Lose that inbox and you face a “Recovery fee: $50” and a process that “can take up to 60 days to complete”, during which you cannot send funds from the Vault.
4. Borrow Mode Can Liquidate You
Borrow is a loan against volatile collateral. weETH counts for only 55% of its value in borrowing power, and if you borrow near that limit, a sharp fall in ETH can push the health factor to 1.00, where collateral may be sold. The balance “increases every second”. To spend stablecoins only, stay in Direct Pay.
5. Not Regulated, and Access Can Be Closed at Will
The documentation says it outright: “ether.fi is not a regulated financial institution”. The international cardholder agreement, under Puerto Rico law, lets your card be suspended or cancelled “in our sole discretion at any time, with or without cause and with or without giving you notice”. It also rules out refunds for unauthorised use of a lost or stolen card.
Luxe and Pinnacle: Who Should Pay $199 or $999?
| Benefit | Core | Luxe | Pinnacle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | $199 a year | $999 a year |
| Or earn it | — | 5K points a month | 25K points a month |
| 3% cap, USD spend | $2,000 a month | $10,000 a month | $50,000 a month |
| FX markup, other currencies (checked on 21 October 2026) | 0.5% | 0.25% | None |
| ATM withdrawals | Fee not published | Fee not published | 10 free a month |
| Physical card | $50 plastic | 1 metal, free | 2 metal, free |
| Subscription cashback | — | 10%, up to $10 a month | 20%, up to $20 a month |
| Account protection | $10,000 | $50,000 | $200,000 or $100,000 |
On cashback alone, a paid Luxe beats Core from about $2,830 of monthly spend: at $4,000 a month Luxe returns $120 against Core’s $75, a $540 yearly gap for a $199 fee. From $5,000 a month, card spend earns Luxe for free (5,000 points), so the fee only matters below that.
Pinnacle adds no cashback until you pass Luxe’s $10,000 cap; against a points-earned Luxe, paying $999 for Pinnacle wins only above about $14,200 a month, and from $25,000 a month Pinnacle is free too. Below that, the extra money buys zero FX markup, 10 free ATM withdrawals a month, a second metal card and more protection.
Holding $15,000 or $100,000 in its Liquid yield vaults also qualifies, with their own risks. Points reset monthly, so a quiet month can cost you the level unless you bought the year.

Is ether.fi Cash Safe?
Short answer: it swaps custodian risk for smart-contract, token-price and policy risk, and nothing here is a bank deposit.
Protection, Not Insurance
A Cash Protection Program may reimburse losses from third-party exploits of the Vault and card contracts on Optimism: up to $10,000 on Core and $50,000 on Luxe, from a $5 million pool. A self-filed claim costs $100, refunded if approved. One article says it “isn’t an insurance policy”; the membership page says “insured through a licensed underwriter”. Either way, it does not cover a compromised passkey or market losses.
Incidents on Record
In November 2025, users reported fraudulent charges on cards they had never used. Chief executive Mike Silagadze said the company was investigating and that “All users who have experienced fraudulent transactions will receive refunds”, according to ChainCatcher (we could not open his original post). On 11 September 2026 a legacy contract once used by the Liquid vaults cost users about $40,000 on Ethereum and 2,257 sETHFI on Arbitrum, now being reimbursed, and Cash accounts “were not exploitable through this path”.
What Cardholders Say
Trustpilot showed 3.9 out of 5 from 91 reviews on 8 October 2026: 58% five stars, 27% one star. The company claimed the profile in August 2026, and on page two 20 of the 22 reviews were dated 17–25 September 2026, 18 of them four or five stars, so read the average with care.
Complaints are specific. One reads “I sent 10k they never credited it to my account” (29 September 2026). Another (posted 10 July 2026, updated 25 August) describes three weeks stuck in verification, and a third, from 8 April 2026, warns funds “could be locked due to so called upgrades”.
App stores score it higher: 4.94 from 376 ratings on the US App Store and 4.71 from 274 on Google Play. The company reports over 500,000 members (August 2026).

ether.fi Cash vs Avici, KAST and Wirex One
We have used Wirex since 2021, as well as KAST and Avici, but not this card; our three-card comparison covers them in depth. Data: issuers’ documents, 8 October 2026.
| Feature | ether.fi Cash | Avici | KAST | Wirex One |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custody | Self-custodial Vault; key export “planned” | Self-custodial escrow; Solana key exportable | Custodial under its Terms; optional Self-Custody Mode | Self-custodial wallet, key exportable; plus USD, EUR and GBP accounts |
| Card type | Visa Signature credit; Direct Pay or Aave borrow | Secured Visa credit card | Secured Visa credit; Platinum on the free tier | Visa or Mastercard debit |

| Annual fee | Core $0; Luxe $199; Pinnacle $999 | Platinum $0; Signature $30, then $20 | Standard $0; Premium $1,000 | $0, no monthly fee either |
vs Avici: The Other Self-Custodial Credit Card
The closest match: a secured Visa credit card, also issued by Third National, with your USDC in an escrow contract that neither Avici nor the issuer controls, and a Solana private key you can already export. No cashback and no EU or UK, but Platinum has no annual fee and no FX markup. Our Avici review explains its two-step funding.
Referral code QF3VW9 at sign-up — Avici’s referral terms (23 September 2026) give referred users an $8 welcome bonus, not a discount.
vs KAST: Dollar Cashback, Custodial Model
KAST pays 1.5% in USD on the first $2,000 a month on its free tier, against 3% in ETHFI here. Its Terms say deposits “are sold to KAST” and held by a custodian, while its US cardholder agreement says KAST will not hold custody of your collateral. A help article of 14 September 2026 describes an optional Self-Custody Mode, available where KAST has enabled it. Our KAST review covers the card we use daily.
Promo code LBY9BQVJ — 10% off a paid membership.
vs Wirex One: Zero FX, No US Access
Wirex One relaunched publicly on 16 September 2026 with a self-custodial crypto wallet (keys exportable) and USD, EUR and GBP accounts. It charges no FX or monthly fee and pays 0.5–8% in USD by tier. Higher tiers need a bigger portfolio and WPAY share, and cashback can be withdrawn only up to $25–$2,000 a month. The card works in 73 countries, not the US. Our Wirex review covers the card we have held since 2021.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ether.fi safe to use?
It reduces custodian risk: your coins sit in a smart-contract Vault, and card payments run within limits you set, though you cannot export the key yet. You still carry smart-contract, token-price and policy risk, the operator is unregulated, and Core-level protection stops at $10,000. None of it is deposit insurance.
Does the ether.fi card give airport lounge access?
Yes, pay-as-you-go through the Visa Airport Companion app; the help centre does not track which lounges take part. Free premium-lounge passes, two on Luxe and unlimited on Pinnacle, are announced for mid-late October 2026 but were not live on 8 October.
Is ether.fi Cash a real credit card?
Yes, a Visa Signature credit card, but the credit comes from Aave lending markets, not the issuing bank. Borrow mode is a crypto-secured loan at a variable rate, with no grace period. In Direct Pay mode it acts like a debit card.
How is the cashback paid?
In ETHFI tokens. The amount is set in dollars, converted when the purchase clears and locked for seven days; you can claim from $5. Rates step down above your level’s monthly cap, and the payout token has changed three times since October 2025.
What does an ATM withdrawal cost?
Pinnacle and VIP get 10 free withdrawals a month. For Core and Luxe the fee is unpublished: the help-centre article updated 16 October 2026 lists the limits but no ATM fee line, so we treat the fee as not published (checked on 21 October 2026), and archived pages showed 2%. Every level can take out $5,000 at a time, five times and up to $25,000 in 24 hours (help centre, checked on 21 October 2026).
Which is better, ether.fi Cash or Avici?
Choose this card for cashback, EU or UK access and the option to borrow against ETH. Choose Avici if you live where it operates, want a private-key export today and can skip rewards. Both are Visa credit cards from Third National.
Final Verdict
On paper, ether.fi Cash beats Avici on rewards and reach: 3% back up to a cap against none, plus the UK and most of the EU, where Avici does not operate. What keeps it at 7.5/10 is everything around the 3%: payouts in ETHFI, a payout token changed three times in a year, unpublished Core and Luxe ATM fees, and an operator that can close access at will.
- Get it if you hold stablecoins or ETH in a listed country and accept cashback in ETHFI.
- Choose KAST if you want dollar cashback and accept custody.
- Choose Avici for a key export today, outside Europe.
- Choose Wirex One for many currencies, outside the US.
